Selenium and Immunity

Selenium is the active center of various enzymes in human body. It has a broad spectrum of functions on human body and is able to resist diseases, prevent aging and enhance immune function in human life, so as to achieve the balance of body function. Selenium can effectively improve the immunity level in terms of cellular immune, humoral immune and non-specific immune functions.

1)       Effects of selenium on cellular immune function

                           a)         Selenium can promote lymphokine secretion of lymphocyte.

           b)         Selenium can enhance cytotoxic function of cells.

2)       Effects of selenium on humoral immune function

Selenium can enhance the humoral immunity, stimulate the formation of immunoglobulin. Selenium has activated effect on humoral immunity and can improve the function of immunoglobulin M and G antibodies.

3)       Effects of selenium on non-specific immune function

Nonspecific immunity is mainly the phagocytosis and killing function of phagocytic cells (macrophages and neutrophils) against pathogens. Phagocytic cells must first move closer to the pathogens, and then phagocytize and kill them. Selenium impacts the three phases —- chemotaxis, phagocytosis and killing at different degrees.

Selenium can help enhance the phagocytosis and sterilization ability of macrophage. In the course of phagocytosis of macrophages, some peroxides (oxygen free radicals) often escape and invade other parts of macrophages, which causes damage to macrophages. However, glutathione peroxidase in the human body can eliminate these escaped peroxides. Selenium is the significant composition of the glutathione peroxidase. In the case of selenium deficiency, the enzyme activity cannot be fully expressed. 1. Oxygen free radicals

  • Smoking, air pollution, chemicals, residues of pesticides and fertilizers, alcohol, solar radiation etc
  • About 1.5×105 oxidative adducts per human cell daily. Hence, oxygen free radical is the root cause of many diseases.

2. Telomere & Telomerase

  • A telomere is a region of repetitive nucleotide sequences at each end of a chromatid, which stabilizes the end of the chromosome and protects it from deterioration or from fusion with neighboring chromosomes.
  • The length of a telomere determines the lifespan of a cell. Over time, due to each cell division, the telomere ends become shorter. They are replenished by an enzyme, telomerase reverse transcriptase. Otherwise, the chromatid becomes unstable.
  • The normal DNA replication causes telomere shortening, while oxidative stress accelerates it.
  • When the telomere shortens to a critical length, the chromosome will lose it’s stability and senescence or apoptosis of the cell will occur

Hayflick phenomenon

  • The concept was advanced by Leonard Hayflick in 1961, at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia.
  • Hayflickdemonstrated that a population of normal human fetal cells in a cell culture will divide between 40 and 60 times (50 times in average) and each generation is about 2.4 years. It is called Hayflick limit.
  • Hence, the average age of human being could be 2.4×50=120years.
Selenium can extend the length of telomere by activating telomerase and lengthen the interval time of successive cell divisions by means of anti-oxidation, so it can greatly extend the human lifespan. Conservative estimates by animal experiments, human life is supposed to be about 150-200 years old.
  • Gerontological Society of China (GSC) recognized 41 Chinese villages of longevity. One of the secrets in these villages of longevity lies in good soil and water environment. A research found that the soil and food there are rich in micronutrients. In particular, the selenium content in the soil is very high. Selenium has been recognized as healthful trace element which plays a vital anti-aging and anti-cancer role in the human body.
  • Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has undertaken soil sampling investigation in many of the villages of longevity and found that all the soil and foods there are rich in trace element selenium, whereas the most famous village of longevity, Bama County in Guangxi Province, has the highest selenium content in soil, 10 times higher than the content regulated by the World Health Organization. The soil of Yongfu County has a selenium content of 1.1 mg/kg, 3.8 times of the national average value in China. And the soil of Xiayi County has a selenium content of 0.68 mcg/L in average, 3.4 times of that in other areas.
  • The study also revealed that the selenium content in hair and blood of centenarians is 3-5 times higher than the national average value. (The average blood selenium content in normal people ranges from 33.20 mcg/L to 196.90 mcg/L.)
